Lastra a Signa
Lastra a Signa derives its name from the presence of
numerous stone caves in the area. It is a very fine
example of the Tuscan gothic style of architecture.
It is located at the center of the valley of Arno close
to both Pisa and Florence. The initial fortifications
in the town were in the form of two castles built on
Mount Cascioli and Mount Orlando. In 1377 a new walled
and towered enclosure was built to protect this town.
Three sides of these walls with gates and towers are
intact though the fourth side is mostly destroyed. The
Florentine architect Fillipo Brunelleschi has also contributed
his expertise in the building of these walls.
