Mercatale Val di Pesa
This town is one of among the towns and villages that lie in the Chianti Classico belt on top of the hills that divide the Greve valley and the Pesa valley. In 1237 the Podesta of Montecampolese orderrd the building of a public square to facilitate the holding of a local market place for the residents. The Strozzi built their family palace in the square. It is now called the Villa Nunzi and is one of the most beautiful and elegant buildings in the square. The Church of St. Mary at Mercatale is near the Villa. It has interesting artistic treasures including a sculpted Astylar Cross and two beautiful altars. The Castle Gabbiano is another beautiful edifice in this town.
