San Casciano Val di Pesa
It is situated on a hill between Val di Pesa and Val di Greve on the northern edge of the Chianti Classico Zone. Some Etruscan finds have shown that San Casciano has been in existence from the seventh century B.C. during the Roman times it was an “outpost” or “mansio” on the hill. Although many castles and towers have been destroyed through the ages parts of the fourteenth century walls remain. Some of the beautiful buildings have been converted to villas for tourists and private ownership. The church of Santa Maria del Prato has beautiful works by Simone Martini, Ugolino di Neri, Tadeo Gaddi and Fra Bartholomew.
