San Donato
San Donato is an ancient hamlet or village in Poggio.
It is close to both Florence and Siena. It has been
inhabited form the Roman ages. The garrison of Christian
soldiers from Arezzo gave the fortress the name San
Donato in memory of their bishop. The Roman church with
its three naves and three apses was built around 1000
A.D. There are innumerable artistic treasures inside
the church. Two gates and a small and a big bell tower
can be seen today. Palazzo Malaspina and Palazzo Pretorio
also bear testimony to its past glory. San Donato was
also chosen to be the seat of peace treaties twice both
in 1176 and 1265.
