Volterra
It is one of the most famous Tuscan towns and its beginnings as an Etruscan settlement are visible till today. From the fifth to the fourth century BC a majestic circle of walls were built of which the Porta all’ Arco and the Porta di Diana and some parts of the walls still remain. It also has majestic buildings like the Theatre, the first Town Hall in Tuscany the Palazzo dei Priori, the Baptistery and the Basilica. The Guarnacci Museum and the Museum of Sacred Art are also treasure houses of art and history. Volterra is a precious gem surrounded by green hills from which streams and creeks flow down to the Era and Cecina rivers making it a popular destination for trekking, horse riding and mountain biking.
