Gaiole in Chianti
Gaiole in Chianti lies between the hills of Chianti
and the hills of the Val d'Arbia. This town can trace
its origins to the Etruscan age as recent archaeological
evidence has found the remains of an ancient cemetery.
The countryside is dotted with many castles some of
which have been converted to villas and others lie in
ruins. The influence of the Firidoli family has been
a strong in this area and their varied constructions
in and around the place lead to the rise of Gaiole as
an important market place. In the late sixteenth century
the town developed outwards from its central piazza
(square), which is in the shape of an elongated triangle.
The local shops open into the square.
