Monteriggioni
The Senesis built this village between the years 1213
and 1219 on a hill overlooking the Cassia Road. Monteriggioni
is one of the most classical and well known among the
Italian walled towns and has been referred to by the
Italian poet Dante in his famous works the Divine Comedy.
The almost perfectly intact medieval walls stretch along
a perimeter of five hundred and seventy metres and have
fourteen towers and two gates. A main street in the
village joins the two gates. There is a pretty Roman
church as well as a public garden. There are also many
village houses, hotels and other commercial establishments
with their own private gardens.
